Arts – Dance

ATC2O1 – Dance, Grade 10, Open
In this course students develop their dance skills and learn the theoretical basis for communicating through movement. Students will not only learn about the historical development of dance and other theoretical frameworks, they will also create movement and choreography combinations. Students will reflect on and analyze their current practice and also develop an aesthetic appreciation of dance by participating in dance class, rehearsals and performance.
ATC3O1 – Dance, Grade 11, Open
In this course students will further develop and refine their dance training. Written assignments include the study of influential choreographers and cultural dance styles. Students will create more complex movement and choreography combinations and continue to reflect on and analyze their current practice by participating in dance class, rehearsals and performance.
Arts - Drama
AMT3M and AMT4M – Music Theatre, Grades 10,11,12, University/College Preparation
This course works on all the skills required to produce a major musical production. Students will gain experience auditioning for roles or interviewing for behind the scenes roles. They will gain important team building experience and explore many aspects of theatre. Students work together to produce and perform a full-length show and problem-solve aspects such as budget, sales, set, props and costumes. Most roles involve singing and beginners learn fast.
Some of this course involves after school time and it is recommended that students join the school choir to get extra experience singing.
ADA1O1 – Drama, Grade 9, Open
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

ADA2O1 – Drama, Grade 10, Open
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

ADA3M1 – Drama, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and time periods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could be used in their presentations, and analyse the functions of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences.
Prerequisite: Drama, Grade 9 or 10, Open
ADA4M1 – Drama, Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with forms and conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods. Students will interpret dramatic literature and other texts and media sources while learning about various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significance
of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyse how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goals beyond secondary school.

Arts - Visual
AVI1O1 – Visual Arts, Grade 9, Open
This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures.
AVI2O1 – Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open
This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., drawing, painting).
AVI3O1 – Visual Arts, Grade 11, Open
This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter, and will evaluate art works, providing grounds for their aesthetic judgments. They will also examine historical and cultural contexts of Western art (including Canadian art) and art from various world cultures to support their study of specific media. Prerequisite: AVI1O1 or AVI2O1
AVI4M1 – Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; use theories of art in analysing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. Prerequisite: AVI3O1 or AVI3M1
